An introduction to wheel building
About the course
Wheel building is often spoken of as a black art surrounded by jargon, competing theories and mystery. This one-day course aims to demystify the process. You will be taught the theories and practice behind building, maintaining, repairing and trueing wheels by a skilled wheel builder who will guide you through each step in the process. During the day you will build a set of wheels yourself and Bikeworks will supply the necessary parts and tools. No previous mechanical skill is required. At the end of the course, you will have acquired the skills to begin your own wheel building journey in confidence.
The course will cover the following topics:
• Tools and Equipment • Choice of materials
• Measurements and Software • Preparation of components
• Lacing and spoke patterns • Tension and dishing
• Balance and truing
About your tutor
Chris built his first set of wheels nearly fifty years ago. They were to upgrade stock wheels that came with his “schoolboy racer” and he instantly became fascinated with the possibilities of the wheel’s dynamic structure. He hasn’t stopped since and nowadays is in demand to build wheels for everyone from everyday commuters to World Champions. On the way he’s passed on a lot of knowledge to other builders and learned from some of the best builders in the industry.
